Before We Started
Medly needed both a digital pharmacy and an online eCommerce store, where buyers could order prescriptions as well as typical drug store items. Buyers should be able to add prescription medications, health and beauty items, snacks, and holiday-themed goods to carts before entering a secure check-out process and having everything delivered within a few hours. When Medly approached Plan Left, we started from the ground up.
After We Were Done
The eCommerce website provided to Medly met every need, from patient privacy to inventory management, and from payment portals to third-party logistics. Patients could order prescriptions, shampoo, razors, and a bottle of soda to be delivered to their homes within hours without compromising their banking or health information.
Custom Design, Custom Software Development, and a Shopify Integration
When clients state a very specific set of requirements that don’t fit the usual turnkey solutions, Plan Left turns to custom solutions, including website design and software development that make possible what would otherwise be considered impossible. By integrating various available tools, such as Okta for identity management and Shopify Plus for a headless eCommerce experience, Medly soon received the exact website and eCommerce solution they needed.
The Problem
Offering prescription medications in addition to eCommerce items presented a special set of challenges. Delivery services comparable to Amazon Prime or DoorDash complicated the need further. With several components to keep in mind—insurance, patient privacy, and payment portals—Plan Left knew a custom website with custom software was the only answer.

The Plan
Plan Left integrated an identity management and a secure, encrypted Rx order into a headless eCommerce store. We used Okta for the identity management solution, Shopify Plus for the headless eCommerce need, all built on a custom NodeJS platform. As part of the process, we also helped to set up third-party logistics, a warehouse management system, an order management system, a product management system, and an inventory management system.
