Who: Kanye West

The outfit he’s wearing: A custom made Burberry jacket, a mock-turtle neck sweater, boot cut trousers, navy boots, and a gold chain.

Location: The Wall Street Journal Innovator awards at The MoMA, New York City.

Why it works: This fit is indicative of where the wider capital “M” menswear conversation is heading right now. There’s a modern and refined perspective on tailoring (no egregious branding, not too slim, nor too wide on the cut), a monotone color scheme, and a hit of something unexpected: a pair of high-rise Equestrian-style riding boots, also presumably from Burberry.

Editor’s Notes: It’s been a minute since we’ve seen ’Ye don something a little more formal, so it make sense that West would turn to friend and former collaborator Riccardo Tisci, Chief Creative Officer of Burberry, for the occasion. The occasion in question – the Wall Street Journal awards – was actually honoring Tisci as well.

While it’s a refreshing change to see Kanye dress up in a suit again, the choice of color reflects some of Kanye’s more recent workwear-oriented outfits, which have been predominantly in blue shades, matching the  tone used on his latest record Jesus Is King.

Style choices aside, Kanye appeared extremely happy and pleased to be attending with Kim Kardashian who wore a custom-made denim corset also from Burberry. It appears that the biggest trend for FW19 is cherishing your wife and family.
