HBO‘s anticipated Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts has reportedly been cancelled. News of the termination comes as Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss just announced they will no longer be working on their expected Star Wars trilogy due to an increased workload surrounding their mammoth Netflix deal.

While HBO has yet to make an official announcement, showrunner for the GoT prequel, Jane Goldman, has been emailing the cast and crew to make them aware of the cancellation, Deadline reports. A specific reason for the show’s abolishment has yet to be revealed.

The pilot for the GoT prequel was written by Goldman (Kingsman), again, starring Naomi Watts, with support from John Simm and Naomi Ackie, among others. The episode, directed by S.J. Clarkson, was short over the summer. Deadline adds, however, that the pilot was not well received following post-production and re-editing.

With no Game of Thrones prequel on the way, this ultimately leaves HBO searching for its next big franchise following the award-winning series’ finale earlier this year.

On this week’s episode of The Dropcast, we are joined by studio with Mark Weston, the creative director of British luxury brand Dunhill.
