Frightening Social Media Faux Pas

Social media dominates a vast amount of time people spend on the Internet, so why is it that so many people and companies are wildly unsuccessful in their social media campaigns?  You know what I’m talking about. You may be struggling with your own social media marketing this very minute. Well, these social media faux pas are partially to blame for this unsuccessful venture you may be on. Let me tell you three of the many social media faux pas you should just stop doing right this second (or after you read this).

1) Automated Greetings

You know when you follow someone on Twitter and right after you click that follow button you receive a direct message? Yeah, I know you know what I’m talking about because I’m 99% positive you’ve gotten one. Maybe you’re sending them from your own account. Personally, I feel spammed if this happens to me.

If I follow you, I already know who you are and am interested in what you have to say to me, so please, PLEASE, don’t send me a DM filling up my inbox. It’s annoying. I would much rather you send me a tweet thanking me for following you and then move along to a wonderful conversation via Twitter so I know you’re a real person.

2)   Unable to Develop a Unique Voice

If you’re on the various social media platforms and are actively using them, you should establish a tone just for that company, product, or brand as a whole. Your voice represents your brand, and your brand is for all to see. Having a social media presence as unique as your brand is highly important.

If you have a fun, unique brand, maybe try being somewhat humorous, but informative at the same time. Above all, be sure your social voice fits your buyer personas. Old Spice has established a great social voice for their brand, so props to whoever established that.

3) Not Having a Social Media Strategy

If you don’t have a solid social media strategy in place, yet are on all social media platforms, you’re probably better off not being on them at all. Sorry for being blunt (no, I’m not). By not having a set social media plan, you are missing out on several things, one of those being the optimization of your social lead generation. You must allow the appropriate time and resources to implement a great plan and a crystal clear idea on how to further your strategy.

A few things I would recommend to start out with if you’re a social media strategy newbie would be to establish your identity and voice (see #2 above). Then do some social listening. What are your followers and buyers saying to you or about you? What are other industries doing successfully in their campaigns? Creating quality content is also key in a #winning social media plan. If you don’t have quality content, you probably shouldn’t share it. It’s quality over quantity, y’all.

So, there you have it. Three social media faux pas you should run screaming from. If you feel that you need some help with this, that’s what we are here for. It’s scary out there. We would love to help you! Peace and blessings.
